Business trip | Travel and stay abroad

What expenses are deductible if I travel for business or go on workation?

If you have to travel directly for work, these expenses are deductible, with no threshold.  Travel and lodging expenses, however, are "mixed expenses" according to the IRS and are deductible to a limited extent. These limitations differ for sales tax and income tax purposes.

Workation

Is the trip for inspiration and/or does it not have a direct business purpose to be served abroad? In other words, don't need to go there? Then it is important to see to what extent the costs for such a workation are business deductible for the tax authorities. During a workation, you work on your business. You do this by speaking with clients, gaining inspiration or partly carrying out an assignment. An organized trip to regain focus, make plans or work on your marketing expressions is also possible. Thus, in a workation you combine these business activities with vacation. However, 50% of it must have a business character to be considered a workation. In addition, you have a threshold of expenses that you have to meet as a minimum. Of course, only the expenses you incur for the business part of the trip are business deductible. A workation is usually considered a "representation" or "study expense" expense. A threshold amount applies to this category. You also apply this percentage to general expenses.

How do you prove this?

If you want to prove to the Tax Office that it is a (partially) business trip, you should record and save as much evidence as possible. Think of business emails, appointments or minutes. For example, think of the email or the note in which you make an appointment at the restaurant where you are going to take photos.

Of course, you should always keep all receipts, i.e. your invoices, receipts and tickets.
