Wrong or no payment reference?

Have you paid your VAT but provided an incorrect payment reference or no payment reference at all?

If so, the tax authorities are not sure which assessment you want to pay. Depending on your situation, they deal with it in the following ways:

  1. You have outstanding assessments where the payment period has already expired.
    In this case they use the paid amount to settle this. Within 8 weeks you will receive a letter from the IRS telling you which assessment the amount was used for.
  2. Are there no outstanding assesments?
    Then the amount will be refunded. This happens within 8 weeks with the account number known to the tax authorities. Do not have a known account number? Then they will send a letter asking you to provide it.

Did you use a payment reference which does not belong to one of your assessments? Then contact the Tax Information Line: 0800 - 0543. Have your sales tax number ready, so you can pass it on immediately and they can help you faster.
